GIRVAN 2006

Single Grain, Scotland 70cl Ref: 19898

Girvan distillery, situated on the south west coast of Scotland opened in 1963 on the former site of a munitions factory. For a few years the single malt, Ladyburn, now very rare, was produced at the complex. One of the most noticeable structures in the town of Girvan is the distinctive clock-tower, Auld Stumpy which was built during the 1700’s. This ex-Bourbon barrel single grain whisky selected by Berry Bros. & Rudd has pronounced fragrances of vanilla, custard creams and some lively citrus. The palate is surprisingly full and oily with waves of coffee cream, spice and juicy lime. To finish there is a delicate spicy prickle.

The brand

The brand

The Girvan grain distillery was built by William Grant & Sons in 1963 on the site of a Second World War munitions factory. Ayrshire, just next to Girvan port, was the perfect place for a distillery: large quantities of grain could be shipped to the port and Loch Penwhappel provided all the necessary water. The first still that was installed, known as ‘No.1 Apps’, continues to produce excellent quality whisky.

Merchant

Created in 1698, Berry Bros. & Rudd is one of the oldest wine and spirits merchants in the United Kingdom. Official suppliers to the British crown since the 18th century, the Berry and Rudd family is best known for offering a range of original and innovative products. The London shop located at 3 St James Street is a testament to the history of their knowledge and expertise and known for being home to experts with extremely high standards. In its role as a spirits bottler, Berry Bros. & Rudd selects and bottles high-quality whiskies and rums under the names “Berrys’ Own Selection, “BBR Retro” and “Exceptional Casks”.

The line

Berry Bros & Rudd have been selecting and bottling high quality whiskies and rums under the ‘Berry’s Own Selection’ label for more than 200 years. Doug McIvor, their in-house expert, has a strict philosophy when it comes to selecting the casks – they have to be mature, perfectly balanced and present a rare aromatic complexity. Occasionally, the selected barrel differs from the usual style of the distillery that has produced it, but that is of little concern to Doug, so long as the whisky complies with his rigorous criteria.
