Remarkably balanced, it is the first step in an olfactory and gustatory journey punctuated by numerous fruits, spices and heady floral notes. At the end of this journey lie the warehouses of the Buffalo Trace distillery in Kentucky, in the town of Frankfort.

Tasting note

  • Appearance : burnished gold with copper tinges.
  • Nose : fine, juicy. Stewed fruits (peach, apricot, Mirabelle plum) mingle silkily with spices which are equally gentle, almost smooth. Develops with voluptuous notes of prune cake, rum and raisin ice-cream and marron glacé. Perfectly framed overall by a very fine woodiness.
  • Palate : more firm than the nose implies, the spices have become stronger and nuts (cashew, almonds) have replaced the fresh fruit. The mid-palate is balsamic (pine, menthol). Gradually, notes of vanilla and tobacco take hold of the end of the palate. A handful of red and black fruits (strawberry, blackcurrants) arrive in a grand finale to enrich the chromatic palette.
  • Overall : soft, full of tranquillity. Like the nose, it demonstrates great delicacy. Its plump tannins apply gentle pressure to the taste buds. Sapid and fresh, it lingers with notes of cocoa beans and roasted coffee. The retro-olfactation is saline and gently spicy (ginger). The empty glass evokes a sweet wine (muscat, Gewurtztraminer).

Buffalo Trace, the emblematic bourbon from the distillery of the same name, is a classical American whiskey. Created in 1999, this Kentucky Straight bourbon, produced from a mash bill of maize (80%), rye (10%) and barley (10%), is a blend of some thirty barrels of the distillery’s new make spirit aged between 8 and 12 years old. For a long time almost impossible to find outside the United States, it is now finally available in Europe, in a new version bottled at 40% (instead of 45% in America).
