Tasting note

  • Appearance : vieil or à reflets topaze.
  • Nose : mélange de fermeté et de douceur, il se montre dans un premier temps épicé, voire pimenté (Espelette). Il s’ouvre sur des notes d’estragon et de fruits frais (melon, pêche jaune). Quelques grains de sel viennent vivifier la palette aromatique. Il se prolonge sur l’herbe coupée, le caramel au beurre salé et les noix fraîches.
  • Palate : pleine de vivacité, elle fait aussi preuve de beaucoup d’équilibre. Des notes de muscat lui procurent un joli toucher, tandis que des agrumes confits (citron, pamplemousse) dynamisent le milieu de bouche. Balsamique (cèdre), elle se montre également épicée (cannelle, gingembre), chocolatée et réglissée.
  • Overall : longue, duveteuse. Cette fois, elle laisse volontairement le sherry prendre totalement possession du palais. Des notes de toffee, de datte et de figue précèdent des raisins de Corinthe et des noix de cajou. La rétroolfaction est herbacée (orge maltée), cacaotée et finement boisée. Le verre vide nous emmène à l’ombre des tilleuls en fleurs.

Rather unjustly, Benriach was, until just a few years ago, relatively unknown, but it hasn’t ceased to make up for lost time. Indeed, this distillery has, for many decades, had a huge amount to offer and has proven this time and time again since being bought in 2004. Its warehouses are bursting with all sorts of sherry butts (Oloroso, Pedro Ximénez, etc.), new American oak casks, ex-bourbon barrels and hogsheads dating back to the 1960s, as well as casks previously used for wine, rum, madeira, port and even Rioja!
