Overwhelming us with baskets of fruit, each more succulent than the next, and bouquets of exquisitely scented flowers, this Amrut matured in a port cask is extremely generous. Its spices, ointments, notes of tobacco and resin come directly from the slow degradation of peat specially chosen to underscore aromas and flavours rather than influence them. Outstanding.

Profile : generous and particularly fruity (orange, apricot, strawberry), the nose is also chocolatey and medicinal. The palate is oriental (Turkish delight, orange blossom), resinous and spicy (nutmeg). Red and black fruit (blackcurrant, raspberry) return at the end of the palate. Notes of verbena and sage.

Product details

Tasting note

  • Appearance : copper with glints of burnished gold.
  • Nose : full-bodied, complex. Candied orange, apricot, toasted walnut, black liquorice, musk, and the enveloping fragrance of carnations... as well as notes of rhubarb, milk chocolate, clover, and artichoke... not forgetting, of course, various ointments in generous supply, are all revealed on the initial nose. The nose then develops elegantly with red fruits (strawberry, raspberry, red currant), marmalade and candied ginger.
  • Palate : elegant, lively. With a certain self-control, the palate is first delicately woody and spicy (cardamom, pink peppercorn) before developing into a more pastry (custard, lemon meringue tart) and floral (rose, peony) register. Allowed to breathe, the mid-palate confidently asserts its oriental temperament (Turkish delight, orange blossom). With remarkable maturity, the end of the palate is dominated by dried fruits (date, fig).
  • Overall : long, silky. Notes of mild tobacco and resin (pine, cedar) slip in just before strong spices (clove, nutmeg) appear. Gradually, exotic fruits (guava, persimmon) arrive to refresh the palate. The very end of the palate is particularly well-balanced, revealing abundant red and black fruits (strawberry, raspberry, blackberry, blackcurrants). The retro-nasal olfaction is filled with the fragrance of numerous aromatic plants (verbena, sage, lime blossom). The empty glass is malty, spiced and salty.
The brand

The brand

Produced almost exclusively from barley grown in the fertile plains at the foot of the Himalayas, in order to retain its natural characteristics at bottling Amrut is still not chill filtered. This whisky is similar to Speyside whiskies, fruity on the palate with hints of spice and chocolate which are typical to ageing in casks previously used for bourbon. Proud of its success, the distillery now offers small batches with a natural alcohol content of over 60% to focus greater attention on the finesse and unique character of this single malt. A Peated version, made with Scottish malted barley, has been available for some years, paying testament to its unique expertise. Find out more

The distillery

An absolute revelation, Amrut single malt is beyond any doubt the most outstanding Indian whisky. A great whisky consumer, this subcontinent is also one of the world’s major producers. However, Amrut is the only whisky with the necessary qualities for it to be marketed in Europe. Founded in 1948, a few months after India’s independence, this company based in Bangalore, in the south of India, began to produce whisky according to the Scottish model. Unique in the world of whisky, the barrel store, which contains mainly bourbon barrels, acts as an “age-accelerator”, thanks to its location about 1000 metres above sea level and the tropical climate.
