ABERFELDY 1999 46%

Single Malt, Scotland / Highlands 70cl Ref: 51177

Aberfeldy 1999 is a light bodied single malt matured in refill Sherry hogsheads and bottled at 46% alcohol by volume.

Connoisseurs Choice is a collection of single malts launched by the independent bottlers Gordon & MacPhail in mid-1960. John Dewar was one of the first individuals to produce and market Blended Scotch Whisky, when he started his business in 1846. But it was his son who made the name of Dewar a world wide whisky brand. Aberfeldy Distillery built in 1898, produced a whisky which is a core component of all Dewar's blends.

The brand

The brand

Aberfeldy Distillery, in the eastern Highlands of Scotland, uses a fresh water spring that is high in minerals. The distillery produces a single malt which reveals extensive notes of grain and fruit. Stamping its mark, the Aberfeldy single malt is the most powerful of the Midland malts. The best of these leaves a pleasant softness on the palate. For a long time limited to two official malts, one 12 year old and one 21 year old, several single casks have been released since 2009, much to the delight of connoisseurs. Aberfeldy is also the base for the famous Dewar’s blend.

This independent bottler is without a doubt one of the most highly acclaimed in Scotland. It stands out, not for its age (though it is the oldest independent bottler in Scotland), but for its complete mastery of cask ageing. Gordon & MacPhail is the only bottler to have its own casks - carefully chosen for the purpose - filled by the distilleries themselves, instead of simply buying the ones suggested to them by the latter. This allows it to determine, in advance and with great precision, exactly how many years a whisky will need to reach ideal maturation.

The line

Of all the existing specialist bottling ranges, Connoisseurs Choice is without doubt the oldest. The label underwent a few changes in the 1980s. Plainer and more restrained, it became two-toned with creams and browns. When segmentation by region of production region was adopted by the whisky industry in the early 1990s, the range changed its identity again. The label now shows a map of the region of Scotland where the malt comes from. To the delight of whisky enthusiasts, the range, which is always evolving, is now bottled at 43% and 46%.
